Why Most Small Business Websites Fail to Generate Enquiries
Most small business websites are built to exist, not to work. They satisfy a box on a to-do list – “get a website” – without being designed around the actual goal of generating enquiries. Here are the patterns I see most often.
Nobody can find it
A website that isn’t visible in search results relies entirely on people who already know you exist. That’s a very small pool. Without basic SEO – clear page titles, relevant content, a properly submitted sitemap – your site is essentially invisible to everyone else.
It’s not clear what you do
Visitors decide in seconds whether to stay or leave. If your homepage doesn’t immediately explain who you help and what you do for them, most visitors will leave before they get far enough to become interested. Clever taglines and vague mission statements don’t count. Plain language does.
There’s no reason to get in touch
Many websites describe what a business does but give the visitor no compelling reason to take action. What will they get from contacting you that they can’t get elsewhere? Why now rather than later? If the answer isn’t on the page, most people will defer and then forget.
The contact process is too hard
A long contact form, a phone number buried in the footer, or an email address that requires copying and pasting – any unnecessary friction reduces the number of people who follow through. The easier you make it to get in touch, the more people will.
It doesn’t build trust
People buy from businesses they trust. Trust is built through testimonials, clear pricing, professional presentation, honest content, and evidence that you’ve done this before. A website that offers none of these signals gives visitors no reason to choose you over someone else.
The good news is that none of these problems are expensive to fix. They’re mostly about clarity and intent. A website built with the explicit goal of generating enquiries – rather than just existing – will almost always outperform one that wasn’t.
